OCTOBER, 2006 -- American Author Sharon Flake visited Jack Hayward High School this month to discuss her book The Skin I'm In, a favourite of JHHS Students. On behalf of the Minister's Book Club, a special assembly was held to welcome the author to JHHS.

I want to say, first of all, how sorry I am not to be with you today, but you can be certain that I am thinking of all of you at this very moment and that you are never out of my heart. I wish also to thank Minister Sears and representatives of the Ministry of Education for honoring us with their presence at this very, very Special Assembly and to welcome Sharon Flake in to our midst.

I can think of no greater gift to someone that one loves, as I love all of you, than the gift of the appreciation of literature and the written word. It opens up the world, fills one with joy and excitement, and can literally turn one’s life around. Add to this, the ability to express one’s feelings and emotions through writing – whether it be a personal journal, letters, or today – eloquent emails, and, as they say, one ‘has it made.’

These are the gifts that The Minister’s Book Club, of which I am so honored to be National Patron, wishes to impart to all of you and I am so proud, but not surprised, that my precious school, Sir Jack Hayward High, was the very first school in the Bahamas to embrace this wonderful programme.

We are so thrilled to welcome Sharon Flake as part of our “visiting authors” endeavor and know how exciting it is to be given the opportunity to meet and interact with the very person who wrote the words that one so loved reading. I am also certain that the ‘creative writing seminars’ that Ms. Flake will be conducting may very well produce some budding authors who never even realized that talent was within them.

I personally, take such unbelievable joy from the feeling that I may be helping to expand all, or even just some of your horizons in such a very positive way. I can’t wait to hear all about it, I will be thinking of all of you, and remain, your ever-devoted Patron, Frances Singer-Hayward.
