Alfred Sears' vision for promoting the appreciation of Caribbean literature throughout the schools of the Bahamas was given a major head start Thursday, 27th January, 2005 at the launching of the "Minister's Book Club" at JHHS, under the patronage of school Patron, Frances Singer-Hayward. Minister Sears in his remarks, recounted his experiences as a troubled youth, describing to the students how reading not only opened up the world to him, but was very instrumental in changing the direction of his life. Frances Singer-Hayward stated that both she and Sir Jack are avid readers and were in total support of the programme. She added that she wanted the JHHS students to have full appreciation of the 'written word' and to experience the same joy and excitement that she experienced as a student when reading a worthwhile piece of literature. The aims and direction of the Club were also described by Mrs. Delores Kellman-Jones, director and coordinator of the programme at the school. Also present, sharing their support that morning were Deputy Director of Education, Mr. Cecil Thompson, and other representatives from the Ministry of Education. Following the ceremony the honoured guests were treated to a beautiful reception prepared by the Hospitality Department at the school. |
